Chapter 6 - THE PAPER I SIGNED

Rachel asked the question I dreaded.

"Did Julian ever put documents in front of you without explaining them?"

I laughed once.

Six years of marriage flashed through my mind in signatures.

Mortgage forms.

Tax documents.

Insurance renewals.

School papers.

Company acknowledgments Julian said were "routine spouse consents."

One memory surfaced.

Maya was six months old. I had not slept more than three hours at a time in weeks.

Julian brought me coffee and three pages.

"Just sign here, Elle. It keeps the lenders happy."

I signed.

Rachel found the document by noon.

It was not routine.

It was a marital waiver relinquishing any claim I might have through Blackwood-backed financing.

The signature was mine.

The notary stamp belonged to Thomas Vale.

Gideon looked murderous.

I looked worse.

"I signed it."

Rachel shook her head. "The language may be challengeable."

"But I signed it."

That mattered to me.

I had spent years pretending Julian fooled me every second of every day.

The truth was uglier.

Sometimes I handed him the pen because trusting him was easier than asking another question.

Harrison traced the waiver.

It had been used to secure a refinancing package two years later.

That package moved twenty-two percent of Vance Group voting rights into a nominee structure.

The nominee company was controlled by Thomas.

He had effectively hidden Maya's shares from both sides.

"Why?" I asked.

My father answered.

"To sell them."

A pending transaction appeared in the data room.

Buyer: Ross Capital.

Genevieve's family firm.

Closing date: tomorrow.

If the transfer went through, Genevieve's family would gain enough votes to control Vance Group.

Julian would get cash.

Victoria would keep influence.

Maya would lose the stake my father had protected for her.

Rachel looked at me.

"We can seek an injunction."

I nodded.

Then Harrison's phone rang.

He listened for ten seconds.

"Thomas Vale is gone."

"Gone where?"

"His office is empty. Home empty. Passport flagged."

May you like

Gideon looked toward the windows.

Then Harrison added, "And he took the original Blackwood trust book with him."
