Chapter 15 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

Dad left Mom with forty-three dollars in checking.

He moved everything else into an account she could not access.

"He says he'll put it back if I don't testify," Mom told me.

James' jaw tightened. "That's witness intimidation territory. Save every message."

Dad had been careful.

He had not written the threat.

He had said it on the phone.

But Mom had finally learned from the rest of us.

She recorded the call.

"Susan, you're making a choice," Dad's voice said through her phone. "If you stand up in court and help them bury Lauren, don't expect me to finance your betrayal."

Mom's voice: "That money is half mine."

Dad: "Then act like my wife."

The detective listened to the recording.

Her expression hardened.

"Send me a copy."

By noon, Dad had a lawyer too.

By evening, Mom had filed for emergency access to marital funds and moved from the hotel into a small furnished apartment.

I helped her carry two suitcases upstairs.

On the landing, she stopped.

"Do you hate me?"

I considered lying.

I didn't.

"Sometimes I'm furious with you."

She nodded.

"But hate? No."

Tears filled her eyes.

"Can you forgive me?"

"I don't know yet."

She looked wounded.

"That's the truth," I said. "You spent years asking me to swallow the truth so everybody else could feel comfortable. I'm not doing that anymore."

She wiped her cheeks.

"Okay."

For once, okay meant she accepted my boundary instead of negotiating it.

The hearing began the next morning.

Lauren walked into court wearing a navy dress, no jewelry and an expression of perfect wounded innocence.

Dad sat behind her.

He never looked at me.

The prosecutor played the slap video.

Lauren stared at the table.

Then the longer recording played.

Her lawyer objected.

The judge allowed it.

Dad's recorded voice filled the courtroom:

"We covered Tyler. We can cover this."

Every head turned toward him.

May you like

The judge leaned forward.

"Mr. Bennett," she said, "you and I may need to have a separate conversation before this morning is over."
