Chapter 4 - VAULT 214

The Grand Meridian was gone, but the bank beneath it wasn’t.
It had become Sterling Private Trust.
Cedric arrived with Alonzo, Flora, and Detective Mara Lewis two hours after the ruined wedding.
Portia and Graham were told to remain at the estate pending questioning.
The bank manager examined the brass key.
“Box 214 hasn’t been accessed in nineteen years.”
“Whose name?” Cedric asked.
“Eleanor Blackwood.”
His throat tightened.
Inside the vault, Box 214 held no jewelry.
Only files.
A flash drive.
A medical report.
And a second letter.
Cedric opened the report first.
Eleanor’s bloodwork from three weeks before her death showed traces of a sedative she had never been prescribed.
“Who ordered this test?” Mara asked.
Cedric read the signature.
Dr. Samuel Vale.
Portia’s uncle.
Alonzo swore under his breath.
Cedric remembered the final week of his mother's life: the headaches, the missed calls, the way Frances kept telling everyone Eleanor was exhausted and confused. He had accepted those explanations because they were easier than asking why a woman who had run a billion-dollar company suddenly could not remember a board agenda. Now the memory felt less like grief and more like evidence.
The flash drive contained security footage from Eleanor’s private office.
On screen, Graham Vale stood beside Martin Shaw.
Graham said, “Once Cedric marries Portia, he can fight us all he wants. The votes are ours.”
Martin replied, “Eleanor will challenge it.”
Graham smiled.
“Then Eleanor needs to stop being a problem.”
Cedric paused the video.
Nobody spoke.
Flora covered her mouth.
Alonzo looked at Mara. “That sounds like motive.”
“It sounds like something I need copied immediately.”
Cedric opened the second letter.
This one was addressed to Alonzo.
Alonzo frowned.
“Why me?”
He read silently.
Then his face changed.
Cedric stepped closer.
“What does it say?”
Alonzo looked at him.
“Your mother thought my wife’s death was connected.”
Three years earlier, Alonzo’s wife, Sofia, had died in a hit-and-run.
