Chapter 14 - TEN SECONDS

Adrian didn't lie when Clara asked him.
That mattered.
They sat across from each other at the kitchen table while Emma slept upstairs and Olivia stayed at a friend's house.
“What were you going to do before Olivia showed you the video?” Clara asked.
Adrian's face went still.
He knew exactly where the question came from.
“I was going to tell you to leave.”
Clara inhaled slowly.
“For how long?”
“I don't know.”
“Were you going to keep Emma from me?”
His silence was answer enough.
Clara stood and walked to the window.
“I need you to understand why that hurts worse than the slap.”
“I do.”
“No. Listen.”
He did.
“You didn't just think I made a mistake. You thought I was capable of trying to hurt a baby I love more than my own life. You built an entire version of me in your head in seconds, and that version was a monster.”
Adrian cried quietly.
“I know.”
“And then Olivia pressed play.”
“Yes.”
“What if there had been no camera?”
He couldn't answer.
Clara turned.
“That is the question I can't stop asking.”
Adrian wiped his face. “Then don't stop asking it.”
She frowned.
“Make me answer it with what I do next. Not with promises.”
For the next four months, he did.
He continued counseling. He completed his court requirements without complaint. He gave Clara temporary sole decision-making authority regarding Emma's care while they lived separately. He installed no new cameras, demanded no reports, and never used Olivia as a messenger.
At Mercer Development, an independent audit recovered $1.7 million and froze the remaining stolen assets. Daniel became interim CEO while Adrian worked with the board to rebuild controls.
Vanessa pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud, identity theft, evidence fabrication, and child endangerment. Martin received a reduced sentence for cooperation.
The day Vanessa was sentenced, Clara sat in the courtroom beside Olivia.
The judge called the stroller act “a calculated use of an infant as a weapon in an adult scheme.”
Vanessa received years in prison.
She never looked at Clara.
Outside the courthouse, Olivia asked, “Does this mean it's over?”
Clara looked at Adrian standing alone near the steps.
“No,” she said. “It means that part is over.”
That evening, Adrian came to the house to see Emma.
After he put the baby down, Clara handed him a small envelope.
His face changed.
“What is this?”
“Open it.”
Inside was a key.
Adrian stared at her.
Clara said, “Don't misunderstand what it means.”
He looked up.

She took a breath.
“I'm ready to tell you what happens next.”
