Chapter 14 - WHAT MONEY CAN’T BUY

The bullet missed Lucas by less than a foot.

Detective Ortiz fired once.

Preston spun and crashed against the railing, the gun dropping from his hand. He fell to the deck, wounded in the shoulder, alive and screaming.

Lucas stood frozen.

Evelyn reached him and pulled him into her arms.

“Don’t look.”

“I’m okay.”

“You don’t have to be.”

Police handcuffed Preston while paramedics worked on him.

He kept shouting about lawyers, board members, judges he knew, people he could call.

Ortiz leaned down beside him.

“You can call all of them from county lockup.”

For the first time, Preston looked afraid.

The investigation detonated across the city.

Bank records from Rachel’s drive led federal agents to twenty-three shell companies. Diane’s emails tied trustees and executives to years of theft. Rachel’s video reopened Charles Cross’s death as a homicide investigation.

Preston was charged with attempted murder, kidnapping conspiracy, fraud, extortion, and obstruction. Prosecutors later added charges connected to Charles’s death.

Three Foundation trustees resigned within forty-eight hours.

Two were arrested.

News crews camped outside the hotel.

The clip everyone played most was not the shooting at the pier.

It was the gala.

Preston Vale slapping an eleven-year-old waiter.

Lucas falling.

Evelyn helping him up.

The whole ugly empire seemed visible in those ten seconds: power striking downward because it believed nobody would strike back.

A week later, Evelyn sat with Lucas and May in a quiet conference room.

“There’s something you should know,” she said.

Lucas eyed the folder in front of her. “More secrets?”

“No secrets.”

The Cross Foundation board had been dissolved and placed under independent oversight. Evelyn was establishing a restitution fund using recovered assets.

She pushed the folder toward him.

“Your mother documented the fraud for years. Without her, none of this would have come out.”

Lucas looked at the first page.

It was a scholarship trust in Rachel Bennett’s name.

“For me?”

“For any kid who has to work before he should have to.”

Lucas swallowed.

Then he noticed a second document beneath it.

“What’s this?”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“A letter your mother wrote to you. The police found it hidden inside the flash drive.”

Lucas stared at the sealed envelope.

His hands began to shake.

Preston’s arrest did not look dignified. There was no polished executive left by the time officers lifted him onto a stretcher. His hair was wet with river mist. His white shirt was dirty. He kept demanding his phone as if one call could restore the world that had obeyed him that morning.

Lucas watched from behind Evelyn’s shoulder.

Preston caught his eye. “Lucas. Listen to me.”

Lucas stepped out where he could be seen.

For a second Evelyn thought he might scream. Instead, he spoke in the same quiet voice he had used after being slapped in the ballroom.

“You could’ve just left me alone.”

Preston opened his mouth.

Lucas continued. “You couldn’t even do that.”

The paramedics rolled Preston away before he found an answer.

Lucas did not watch the ambulance leave.
