Chapter 18 - RACHEL'S ARREST

Everyone stood.

Rachel did not.

Federal agents charged her with obstruction tied to evidence she had hidden during the seven-year investigation.

"You said you preserved everything."

"Not everything."

Years earlier, Rachel had received a witness statement from a Bellmont accountant.

The accountant named Nathan, Pike, Simon, and Crane.

Rachel buried it.

"Why?"

"My son worked for Nathan."

The old disease.

Fear dressed as duty.

The accountant later disappeared from the industry.

Alive, we learned.

But ruined.

Rachel's long game against Nathan had begun only after that betrayal.

She helped build Founder Protocol.

She found Claire.

She saved evidence.

And she still committed a crime.

"Don't defend me."

"I wasn't going to."

"Good."

"Why tell Claire I was dead?"

"I didn't know."

"Why keep Founder Protocol secret from Ethan?"

"Because Pike still had his token."

Every answer contained a reason.

None made the past clean.

Rachel left in handcuffs. Ethan watched her go.

"I used to think loyalty meant staying."

"What do you think now?"

"Sometimes it means testifying."

He had his own statement to give.

He admitted the false vault access.

The night he backed away from the clinic.

The threats.

The years he chose career over questions.

Prosecutors considered his cooperation.

I did not interfere.

Vanessa faced assault charges over what happened in the lobby.

Her attorney wanted settlement.

I refused private settlement.

She surprised me again.

"I'll plead."

"You could fight."

"I did it."

"I was becoming him."

She meant Nathan.

Maybe awareness arrived late.

Late was still better than never.

Weeks passed.

Bellmont Resorts did not collapse.

Markets hated uncertainty, then adapted.

Employees learned about the independent trust.

Some cheered.

Some feared layoffs.

We held open meetings at every major property.

For the first time, housekeepers asked questions in the same room as directors.

Then Ethan brought me one final security file.

Recovered from Pike's private server.

A video recorded the night of my disappearance.

Claire moving me through the tunnel.

Ethan's anonymous map on the wall.

And Nathan standing alone after we escaped.

He was crying. Then Pike entered.

Nathan said, "Find her."

Pike asked, "Alive?"

Nathan hesitated.

May you like

"No."

The last piece of doubt died.
