Chapter 7 - THE EMPTY VAULT

The fire suppression system contained the smoke before it spread.

The vault opened twelve minutes before Founder Protocol activated.

Using a biometric override assigned to Vanessa.

"No."

"Your fingerprint," I said.

"I wasn't down here."

A figure entered wearing Vanessa's executive ring and gloves.

The biometric reader had accepted a synthetic print.

Then I noticed one cabinet still closed: old brass, mechanical, no network access.

My mother insisted on it when we founded the first Bellmont property.

I remembered the combination: her birthday.

Inside was a ledger labeled REAL OWNERSHIP.

The ledger showed Bellmont's original capitalization.

I owned fifty-four percent.

Nathan owned twenty-one.

Our mother retained ten.

The rest belonged to early investors.

After my death, Nathan had represented my shares through the dormant trust.

But the trust document attached to the ledger contained a clause I had forgotten.

If my death was found to be fraudulently certified by a beneficiary, that beneficiary permanently lost succession rights.

Nathan's twenty-one percent would be frozen too.

"My father loses everything."

"If he forged my death."

"He did."

The certainty in her voice surprised me.

"What aren't you telling me?"

"When I was sixteen, my mother died."

"Car accident," I said.

Vanessa shook her head. "That's what he told everyone."

Vanessa pulled a small key from inside her necklace.

"My mother left me a safe deposit box. Dad never knew."

"What's in it?"

"I don't know. I was supposed to open it if he ever lost control of Bellmont."

"And you waited?"

"I was afraid."

The Bellmont family inheritance nobody documented.

Ethan's radio crackled.

"Sir, we found someone in the east service tunnel."

"Who?"

A guard answered.

May you like

"Dr. Elias Crane."

The man who signed my death certificate was hiding beneath my resort.
