Chapter 11 - THE RECORDING IN THE COAT
The recorder was smaller than Adrian's thumb.
Mara had stitched it into the coat lining the night Richard's men brought her to the residence.
The battery was dead, but the memory survived.
The first recording captured Daniel and Mara in a parked car.
Mara's voice: "The east foundation fails compressive strength by thirty percent."
Daniel: "Then we stop the pour."
Mara: "Richard won't."
Daniel: "He doesn't get to vote on gravity."
Marissa laughed once through tears.
"That was Daniel."
The next file was recorded two days later.
Richard's voice was unmistakable.
"You two are turning a scheduling problem into a federal case."
Daniel answered, "People live in these buildings."
Richard said, "People live in buildings because men like us finish them."
Then Daniel mentioned the trust.
Not as leverage.
As a warning.
"If you keep threatening me, I'll force the family records open and Adrian will see everything."
Richard's reply was quiet.
"You should have stayed invisible."
The recording ended.
Marissa covered her face.
Ortiz called prosecutors.
Adrian stood by the window unable to move.
Richard had not confessed to murder.
But he had motive.
He had access.
He had hidden Mara.
He had altered evidence.
And he had spent years deciding which members of his family were allowed to exist.
Before police could reach Richard, he called an emergency board meeting.
Adrian's phone filled with messages.
Whitmore directors had received a packet accusing Adrian of emotional instability, misuse of company resources, and secretly promising corporate shares to an employee he was "personally involved with."
Marissa read the email and went cold.
"He made me the scandal."
Adrian looked at the attachment.
There were photographs of him outside her apartment.
Photos from the night he followed her home.
The caption said:
CEO PURSUES WIDOWED HOUSEKEEPER WHILE TRANSFERRING FAMILY ASSETS.
Richard had turned the truth into something filthy.
Then Naomi called.
"The board vote is tomorrow morning."
May you like
"For what?"
"Removing you as CEO."
