Chapter 18 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Martin Caldwell had staged his death after the old concrete lawsuit.

Richard helped him.

In exchange, Caldwell supplied cheap material through shell companies and stayed invisible.

Daniel discovered the arrangement.

Mara turned against her father and helped Daniel collect proof.

"Did Martin kill Daniel?" Adrian asked.

Richard looked wrecked.

"I think so."

Police found Caldwell two days later in a rented house in Rhode Island under another name.

He had files from Harbor Point and photographs of Daniel's car.

More importantly, investigators found a box of industrial safety hardware, including cutters and replacement harness tags.

Forensic testing linked fibers on one tool to the same model webbing Daniel had worn.

Caldwell finally talked when prosecutors showed him Mara's recording.

He admitted entering the site before dawn.

He had partially cut Daniel's harness strap, expecting it to fail during inspection work.

"Why?" Ortiz asked.

Caldwell stared through the interview-room glass.

"Because he was going to put me in prison."

"Richard order it?"

"No."

That truth did not save Richard.

Richard had hidden Mara, altered evidence, obstructed investigators, forged corporate records, and enabled Caldwell for years.

But Daniel's death had not been a single family murder order.

At the courthouse, Marissa stood beside him as charges were announced.

Reporters shouted questions.

"Mrs. Keane, are you now one of the richest women in Massachusetts?"

Marissa stopped.

"No."

The reporter blinked.

"Your son's trust—"

"My son is an eighteen-month-old who likes bananas and throws socks into the toilet. He's not a headline about money."

Adrian almost smiled.

Then another reporter asked him whether he would remain CEO.

Adrian looked at Whitmore headquarters across the street.

"No."

May you like

Marissa turned.

He had not told her.
