Chapter 1 - THE PUSH

Evelyn Parker was halfway down the marble staircase when two hands hit her back.

Not a stumble. Not an accident.

A shove.

Her fingers ripped away from the railing. For one weightless second, she saw sunlight flashing across the glass doors below. Then her shoulder struck the edge of a step.

Pain exploded through her side.

She hit another step, then another, and finally the marble floor with a sound that seemed too loud for such a small woman.

At the top of the staircase, Victoria Lane stood frozen, both hands still lifted.

“You old woman,” she whispered.

Evelyn tried to breathe. Her ribs refused.

Then footsteps thundered from the west hallway.

Alexander Reed came around the corner, phone still in his hand. He had spent twenty years building companies, closing billion-dollar deals, and frightening entire boardrooms into silence. But when he saw his seventy-two-year-old mother twisted at the bottom of the stairs, all of that vanished from his face.

“Mom.”

He dropped to his knees.

Evelyn’s eyes fluttered open. “Alex…”

“What happened?” His voice cracked. “Who did this?”

Victoria hurried down three steps, suddenly crying. “She slipped. I tried to grab her.”

Evelyn looked at her.

Victoria met her eyes and gave the smallest warning shake of her head.

Alexander saw only the blood near his mother’s temple.

“Call an ambulance!” he shouted.

Security rushed into the lobby. Marcus Hale, Alexander’s head of security, came last, holding a tablet against his chest.

“Sir.”

“Not now.”

“You need to see this now.”

Victoria went pale.

Marcus touched the screen.

The lobby camera footage filled the tablet.

Evelyn on the stairs.

Victoria behind her.

The shove.

The fall.

Alexander stopped breathing.

Victoria backed away. “Alex, listen to me—”

Marcus looked directly at him.

“I checked the camera,” he said. “She pushed your mother down.”

Alexander slowly rose to his feet.

Victoria had seen him angry before.

She had never seen him look empty.

“Alexander,” she whispered.

He turned to Marcus. “Lock every door in this house.”

Victoria’s face changed.

And then Evelyn grabbed her son’s wrist from the floor.

Her voice was barely audible.

“Alex… my coat.”

He bent closer.

“There’s something in the pocket.”

May you like

Then her eyes rolled back.

And the ambulance sirens began outside.
