Chapter 8 - GRANT’S CONFESSION

Evelyn refused to stay in the hospital.

The doctor argued.

Alexander argued louder.

Evelyn won.

Two hours later, wearing a wrist brace and a coat over her hospital clothes, she sat in the back of an armored SUV beside her son.

“You are impossible,” Alexander muttered.

“You got that from me.”

The motel smelled like bleach and old cigarettes.

Grant Bell sat on the edge of a bed with a bandage around his head. His hands shook so badly he could barely hold a cup of water.

When Evelyn entered, he stood.

“I’m sorry.”

“For stealing my envelope?” she asked.

“For everything.”

Alexander closed the door. “Start talking.”

Grant did.

Six months earlier, Nolan Pierce had approached him with a plan to move small amounts of Reed Foundation money through consulting companies. Grant had gambling debts and a failing marriage. Nolan promised the money would be replaced before the annual audit.

It never was.

Then Victoria became involved.

“She knew you trusted her,” Grant told Alexander. “She started asking questions about your schedule, your passwords, your estate.”

Alexander’s face hardened.

Grant looked at Evelyn. “Your mother found one of the shell companies. Nolan panicked.”

“Who attacked you?” Marcus asked.

“I don’t know. A man followed me from the mansion. He hit my car at a light. I got away on foot.”

“Why steal the envelope?” Alexander asked.

Grant’s eyes filled with shame. “Nolan told me if I didn’t, he’d send evidence to the police making it look like I stole all eighteen million myself.”

“You did steal some of it.”

“Yes.”

Grant did not defend himself.

Evelyn sat across from him.

“What was supposed to happen to my son?”

Grant looked away.

Alexander stepped closer. “Answer her.”

Grant whispered, “There was going to be a medical event.”

The room went still.

“What kind?”

“I was never told exactly.”

“Nolan planned to trigger the incapacity clause?”

Grant nodded.

“Victoria would stay close to you. Nolan would take temporary voting control. They’d move assets while everyone believed you were recovering.”

Alexander felt sick.

Grant reached into his jacket and pulled out a flash drive.

“I copied their messages.”

Marcus took it.

“One thread is about your mother,” Grant said.

Evelyn’s expression did not change.

Alexander’s did.

“What does it say?”

Grant swallowed.

“Victoria asked Nolan what to do if Evelyn wouldn’t stop digging.”

“And?”

May you like

Grant looked directly at Alexander.

“Nolan wrote back: ‘Then we make sure she never gets another chance.’”
