Chapter 12 - THE GIRL ON THE MANIFEST

The jet was forced to land in Buffalo.

Peter Ashford was arrested on the runway.

There was no child aboard.

But there was a suitcase.

Inside were girls' clothes in Sofia's size.

A fake passport with her photograph.

Medication.

And a notarized letter supposedly signed by Alexander authorizing international travel.

Alexander had never signed it.

Brooks said, "This looks like preparation."

"For kidnapping?"

"Or for making it look like Sofia fled."

Hannah understood first.

"If a child claimant leaves the jurisdiction with her guardian, Veronica can argue fraud and abandonment."

"They were going to frame me."

The passport listed Maria as accompanying adult.

Her photograph had been taken from her employee file.

This was not improvisation.

It was architecture.

Peter refused to speak.

Veronica denied knowledge.

Charles called the entire thing "a rogue doctor's panic."

Then investigators found payment records.

A holding company controlled by Veronica had paid the passport broker.

Brooks finally had enough for conspiracy charges.

Police went to the Ashford townhouse.

Veronica was gone.

Her closet was half empty.

Her phone was on the kitchen counter.

Charles claimed he did not know where she was.

Nobody believed him.

Alexander doubled security around Sofia.

She hated it.

"Why are there men outside my room?"

"To keep you safe."

"I don't like it."

"Okay."

"Can they be farther away?"

"Yes."

Small choice.

Her choice.

It mattered.

That night, she showed him one of Lucia's birthday letters.

On the back, Lucia had written an address.

Alexander recognized it.

An old Sterling hunting lodge in Vermont.

Closed since Victor died.

He called Brooks.

Before she answered, the estate gate alarm triggered.

A black SUV had arrived.

The driver got out with both hands raised.

It was Charles Ashford.

"I know where Veronica went."

"Where?"

"Victor's lodge."

"Why?"

"Because that's where your father kept the original marriage pact."

Alexander's voice hardened.

May you like

"What else is there?"

"The document that proves Sofia isn't the only child Victor hid from you."
