Chapter 8 - FIVE MILLION DOLLARS

Alexander read the policy twice.

"Why would the Ashford Foundation insure Lucia?"

Hannah answered.

"It shouldn't."

The policy listed Lucia as a research consultant.

She had never worked for the foundation.

Her signature was forged.

The medical examination had been approved by Dr. Peter Ashford.

Brooks called financial crimes.

The policy paid out four years earlier.

Five million dollars went into an Ashford foundation account.

Three days later, four million moved to Sterling Holdings.

Alexander felt sick.

"My company received money from her death."

Hannah checked the ledger.

"Not directly. It was booked as a charitable development grant."

"Same money."

Sofia sat beside Maria in the church office coloring a paper angel.

His daughter had spent eight years hidden because adults valued corporate stability more than her life.

He made a decision.

"Freeze every Ashford transaction."

Hannah warned him.

"That could trigger the loan."

"Do it."

By midnight, Charles Ashford filed suit.

By morning, Sterling shares fell eleven percent.

News outlets reported a failed engagement and a "mysterious paternity dispute."

Then Veronica went public.

She stood outside her family's townhouse in a pale blue suit and told cameras she had been "emotionally abused" by Alexander.

She said Sofia was a manipulated household child.

She said the DNA sample was illegally obtained.

She said Alexander had become unstable.

Sofia saw the clip on a tablet.

"Is she saying I'm lying?"

Alexander took it away.

"She's lying."

"Will people believe her?"

"Some."

"My mom said rich people can buy louder voices."

"Your mom was right."

"What do we do?"

"We use the truth."

That afternoon, Brooks called.

The five-million-dollar policy was real.

But one fact was worse.

Someone had attempted to purchase another policy.

Same foundation.

Same structure.

Insured person:

Sofia Reyes.

Application date:

Six weeks earlier.

Veronica had learned Sofia was his daughter six weeks earlier.

The same week she ordered the DNA test.

The policy had been rejected because the required medical exam was never completed.
