Chapter 16 - JOANNE

Joanne Keller was arrested before sunrise.

She broke quickly.

Margaret had been paying her for years.

Not for medical fraud.

For access.

Joanne worked in probate administration.

She could see sealed filings.

Trust changes.

Guardianship petitions.

Judge assignments.

She helped Margaret choose courts and timing.

"Why drive her to Rachel's house?" Brooks asked.

Joanne cried.

"She said she needed to take the baby somewhere safe."

"Did you see the syringe?"

"No."

"Do you believe that now?"

Joanne covered her face.

Margaret had another destination ready.

A private airstrip.

A charter flight to the Cayman Islands.

Two seats booked.

Margaret Patterson.

Emma Patterson.

No Rachel.

No Michael.

A federal kidnapping warrant was issued.

Airports were alerted.

Then Charles finally talked.

He admitted the whole scheme.

The staged injury.

The fake psychiatric records.

The forged travel evidence.

The guardianship.

The trust transfer.

But he claimed Margaret's original plan did not include hurting Emma.

"She wanted a fall," he said.

"What kind of fall?"

"Something minor. A bruise."

I wanted to climb across the table.

Brooks stopped me with one look.

Charles continued.

"Vanessa panicked."

"No. Vanessa threw a skillet."

"Margaret told her to make noise, not use iron."

I did not care about degrees of evil.

Then Charles said something worse.

"Rachel was never supposed to keep Emma after the hearing."

Michael stared.

"What does that mean?"

"Margaret planned to offer Rachel money to leave."

"And if she refused?"

Charles looked away.

"She had a second option."

"What option?"

He swallowed.

"A car accident."

The room went silent.

Michael looked at me.

I could see guilt eating him alive.

Then Brooks's phone rang.

A patrol officer had found Margaret's car near the river.

Empty.

Inside was Emma's birth certificate.

A packed diaper bag.

May you like

And a handwritten note.

IF I CAN'T SAVE THIS FAMILY, NOBODY GETS IT.
