Chapter 18 - ETHAN

Ethan Patterson lived in Ohio.

His mother was Claire Benson.

Michael knew her.

They had dated briefly before he met me.

His face went blank.

"No."

Lena arranged a confidential DNA test.

The result came back two days later.

Michael was Ethan's biological father.

He sat at our dining table holding the report.

"I never knew."

I believed him.

Claire had never told him.

Why?

Because Margaret paid her.

Six years earlier, Margaret had offered Claire money to disappear.

The family trust rules were complicated.

The firstborn child of Michael's line would receive a larger block of voting shares.

Ethan was first.

Emma was second.

Margaret hid Ethan to keep his existence from disrupting her control plan.

Then Emma was born.

Another child she could use.

Michael whispered, "She treated my children like chess pieces."

Brooks contacted Claire.

Claire cried when she learned Margaret was under arrest.

"She told me Michael would take Ethan from me."

Same weapon.

Custody.

Fear.

Money.

Michael asked to speak to Claire.

She refused at first.

Then agreed to a supervised meeting.

He did not demand access to Ethan.

For once, he did not let Patterson power make the decision.

He said, "Tell him when you think he's ready. I'll be here."

That mattered.

To me too.

Margaret was charged with conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, fraud, witness tampering, and offenses tied to Richard's death investigation.

Stephen and Charles faced their own cases.

Vanessa accepted a plea involving child assault and conspiracy.

No one got a clean exit.

Then Lena brought us the final documents Richard had saved.

A new trust.

Not controlled by Michael.

Not controlled by me.

Not controlled by family elders.

Independent trustees would manage Emma's and Ethan's assets until adulthood.

Richard had signed it three days before his death.

But Margaret buried it.

Michael looked at me.

"We can file it."

"Then do it."

"It means I lose control too."

"Good."

He almost smiled.

"That's what Dad wanted."

Then Lena handed me one last sealed letter.

Rachel.

May you like

My name.

Written by Richard before he died.
