Chapter 11 - The ReckoningA sharp scream echoed from the kitchen, followed by the sound of a heavy body hitting the floor.

"Get off me!" Lauren shrieked.

I stood on the other side of the locked bedroom door, trembling violently, listening to the struggle downstairs.

"Where is Marcus?" James’s voice barked, cold and commanding.

"He's outside!" Lauren sobbed, her voice breaking into pathetic hysterics. "He has a gun! He's going to shoot out your windows!"

Before James could react, a loud BANG shattered the silence outside. A bullet tore through the front living room window, embedding itself into the drywall.

"Sarah! Stay down!" James roared from downstairs.

Another shot echoed outside. BANG!

I dropped to the floor beside the bed, covering Emma with my entire body, squeezing my eyes shut as the infant began to wail in horror.

Downstairs, I heard heavy boots running toward the front door. James wasn't hiding. He was advancing.

Out on the front lawn, tires screeched as police sirens wailed in the distance, getting closer by the second.

Through the window, I heard shouting.

"Drop the weapon! Drop it NOW!"

It was the police. They had arrived.

"Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" Marcus's panicked voice screamed from the lawn.

A few agonizing seconds of utter chaos followed—shouted commands, footsteps crunching in the snow, the clink of handcuffs, and finally, silence.

"Clear!" a police officer yelled from outside. "House is secure!"

I unlocked the bedroom door with trembling hands and rushed down the stairs, carrying Emma close to my chest.

The front door was wide open, cold winter air pouring into the foyer.

Out on the snow-covered lawn, lit by the flashing red and blue lights of four police cruisers, Marcus was pinned to the ground, face-first in the snow, handcuffed.

Near the driveway, two officers were escorting Lauren toward a separate squad car. Her hair was matted, her face smeared with mascara and dirt, her hands cuffed tightly behind her back.

James was standing near the porch, speaking with the police sergeant. He turned, saw me standing in the doorway, and immediately walked over, wrapping his arms around both me and Emma.

"It's over," James whispered into my hair, his chest heaving. "It's over."

Lauren turned her head back one last time as she was shoved into the police car. She looked at us—at the complete, unbreakable unit standing on the porch—and for the first time, the rage in her eyes evaporated.

All that was left was absolute, hollow defeat.
