Chapter 6 - The Fractured FamilyChristmas morning didn't feel like Christmas.

There were no cheerful carols, no joyful opening of presents by the fireplace. The house was dead quiet except for the soft babble of baby Emma playing with her wooden rattles on the rug.

Around 9:00 AM, my phone began ringing incessantly.

It was my mother. I ignored it. Then my father called. I ignored that too. Then came a flood of text messages in the family group chat.

Mom: Sarah, how could you let your husband put Lauren in jail on Christmas Day?! She spent the night in a holding cell!

Dad: This has gone way too far, Sarah. You need to drop the charges immediately. Marcus is a dangerous guy, you're dragging our family into deep water.

Mom: Please, Sarah! She's your sister! She was just stressed! She's crying in jail right now! Have some mercy!

I sat at the kitchen island, holding my mug of hot coffee, staring at the screen. A cold, bitter laugh escaped my lips.

"They haven't asked once how Emma is," I whispered to James, who was cleaning his service pistol at the dining table. "Not a single text asking if the baby is okay."

James paused, setting down his cleaning cloth. "Because in their minds, Emma isn't the victim. The family image is the victim. Lauren's comfort is the priority."

"I'm cutting them off," I said, my voice surprising me with its firmness. "All of them. Mom, Dad, Lauren. If they can justify someone hitting my child and then sending a convicted felon to our house, they aren't family."

"I support you one hundred percent," James said softly. "But you need to be prepared. People like your parents won't accept being cut off. They will try to force their way back in."

Ten minutes later, a heavy knock pounded on our front door.

I gasped, looking at James.

He walked to the window, peered through the glass, and sighed. "Speak of the devil. Your parents are on the lawn."

I stood up, anger surging through my veins. "I'll handle this."

I opened the front door, leaving the heavy screen door locked between us.

My parents stood on the porch. Mom was wearing her heavy winter coat, her eyes swollen and red from crying. Dad stood behind her, looking furious, his hands jammed deep into his pockets.

"Sarah!" Mom sobbed, stepping forward. "Unlock the door! We need to talk!"

"You have five seconds to turn around and leave my property," I said, my voice terrifyingly calm.

Dad stepped up, pointing a finger at me. "Listen to me, young lady! You are going to go down to the precinct and tell the police it was all a misunderstanding! You are destroying this family!"

"Lauren hit my daughter!" I roared through the screen door, my voice echoing across the quiet neighborhood. "And then she brought a violent criminal to my house to intimidate us! Where was your outrage when she slapped Emma, Dad?! Where was your motherly instinct, Mom?!"

Mom recoiled as if struck. "She... she didn't mean it..."

"Get off my porch," I commanded. "If you set foot on this property again, I will file a restraining order against both of you."

"Sarah, you can't do this!" Dad yelled. "We're your parents!"

"Not anymore," I said, and slammed the heavy wooden door shut.
