Chapter 18 - THE LAST WILL OF ELEANOR CALDWELL

The private archive contained a sealed codicil to Eleanor Caldwell’s estate.

Howard Pike confirmed it was authentic.

The document was brutal in its simplicity.

If Robert Caldwell’s previously unacknowledged child could be legally verified, a portion of Eleanor’s voting trust transferred to that child.

Claire sat across from Mary while Daniel explained the math.

Enough to make Claire one of the most powerful shareholders in the company.

Claire laughed once, stunned.

“I don’t want it.”

Helen stared at her. “It’s yours.”

“I said I don’t want it.”

Robert looked at his daughter.

“Claire, you don’t have to decide today.”

“Stop talking to me like you’ve been my father for forty years.”

Robert took the hit without defending himself.

Some wounds did not need explanations. They needed time.

Arthur asked the practical question.

“If Claire takes the shares, what happens to control?”

“Mary remains the largest individual voting holder, but any major transaction would require coalition support.”

“Which is exactly what Eleanor wanted. She didn’t trust one person with everything.”

Mary looked at the dead woman’s signature.

All her life, she had been told she would inherit responsibility.

No one had told her responsibility had a sister.

Claire pushed the document away.

“Give me a week.”

“You have as long as you need,” Mary said.

“You’re not angry?”

“I’m angry about roughly fifty things.”

That pulled a tired laugh from Claire.

“But not at you for existing.”

When he hung up, his expression was grim.

“Ethan made bail.”

“How?”

“His attorney argued he isn’t a flight risk.”

“Where is he?”

“He left the courthouse fifteen minutes ago.”

Mary’s phone buzzed at the same moment.

The engagement ring Mary had left on the hotel table.
