Chapter 5 - THE BOARDROOM AT 1:07 A.M.

At 1:07 in the morning, Mary sat at the head of Caldwell Meridian’s emergency board meeting in a wedding dress.

No one commented on it.

Daniel projected the transfer records onto the wall.

“Three unauthorized transfers,” he said. “Two completed. One pending. The approvals were generated through Ms. Caldwell’s credentials while she was physically in Europe.”

Arthur Bell folded his hands. “Can we prove she didn’t authorize them remotely?”

Hotel security records. Flight logs. Device IDs.

“The approvals came from Ethan Pierce’s company laptop.”

Ethan sat at the far end of the table with a lawyer he had found in less than an hour.

“This is absurd,” Ethan said. “Mary gave me access.”

“Access is not authorization,” Daniel replied.

Ethan’s attorney touched his arm.

“Mary, tell them. We shared everything.”

Mary looked at the man she had planned to marry.

“No. I shared everything. You took everything.”

“The compensation committee has authority to suspend Mr. Pierce and freeze all unvested equity pending investigation.”

“Do it,” Mary said.

Ethan stood. “You can’t.”

Arthur didn’t blink. “Sit down.”

“You people are letting a humiliated bride destroy a company because she caught her fiancé cheating.”

“I am not removing you because you cheated.”

“I am removing you because you stole.”

Ethan looked around the room and realized nobody was coming to save him.

“You think freezing my shares matters?”

Ethan turned to Mary.

“You still haven’t read the amendment.”

“What amendment?”

“The one your father signed.”

Robert Caldwell, sitting behind Mary, went still.

Her father’s face had lost all color.

“Dad?”

Robert looked at the table.

Evelyn whispered, “Robert?”

“I signed something three months ago.”

“What did you sign?”

Robert looked at his daughter.

May you like

And said the one answer she never expected.

“I thought it was to protect you.”
