Chapter 15 - WHAT VICTORIA DID

In exchange, she would testify against Conrad.

Ellis asked, “What happened to Edward Cole?”

“My father wanted the merger signed.”

“Edward resisted?”

“At the end.”

His father had built the trap.

Then tried to leave it.

“Edward found out Dad planned to control Nathan through the marriage.”

“Your marriage.”

“Yes.”

“And the child?”

“Edward had already hidden Grace.”

“Why?”

“To keep Dad from finding her.”

“Did Conrad want Grace killed?”

Nathan’s hands curled.

“What did you do?”

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“I told Dad where Grace’s mother worked.”

“I thought he would scare her.”

“You gave him leverage.”

“Yes.”

“What about Edward’s death?”

“Dad told me to replace one of Edward’s medication bottles with a copy.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

Grace caught his sleeve.

“Don’t.”

“I didn’t know it would kill him.”

Ellis said, “You knew it was medication.”

“I knew Dad wanted him sick.”

Victoria had helped manipulate his father.

His father had manipulated Grace.

Conrad had manipulated everyone.

A chain of people calling fear loyalty.

Victoria denied ordering it.

“My father did.”

“The attack in the kitchen?”

“That was me.”

“Why?”

“She had the trust paper.”

“And Lily?”

“I hated her.”

Grace inhaled sharply.

“She had everything I was promised.”

“A child had everything?”

“The shares. Nathan. The future.”

Ellis said, “So you raised the hockey stick.”

In the hallway, she was shaking.

“I should never have come back.”

“No.”

“She almost hurt Lily because of me.”

“No.”

“Because of them.”

He pointed toward the interrogation room.

“You did not create their cruelty by surviving it.”

Nathan did not touch her until she reached for him first.

“Nathan, we have an emergency vote tomorrow.”

“For what?”

“To remove you permanently as CEO.”

May you like

“Who called it?”

Hale said, “Your mother.”
