Chapter 20 - WHAT THEY CHOSE

Nathan did not ask Grace to marry him.

That would have been too easy.

Too much like the old family habit of turning complicated people into contracts.

Days when Grace trusted him.

Days when she remembered five stolen years and hated his last name.

Nathan learned not to defend what hurt her.

Grace learned that caution did not have to become permanent fear.

Lily learned that families could change shape without disappearing.

Three years after the kitchen attack, Nathan stood in the same room again.

The mansion no longer belonged to him.

Before the new owners took possession, Grace asked to see it once.

The tile had been replaced.

The hockey stick was long gone.

Still, Grace stopped near the island.

Nathan did not touch her.

“Want to leave?”

“No.”

Lily reached for her hand.

“This is where everything broke,” she said.

“Everything?”

“No.”

She knelt beside her daughter.

“This is where the lie broke.”

Lily seemed satisfied with that.

He remembered stepping inside.

Victoria standing over them.

Lily whispering Daddy.

At the time, it had felt like his life ended in one second.

He understood now that a life built on lies was supposed to end.

Outside, workers were removing the old Cole crest from the gate.

“Do you miss it?”

“The house?”

“The name meaning something.”

“It still means something.”

“What?”

“A warning.”

“Daddy! Catch me!”

He caught Lily near the fountain and lifted her into the air.

She screamed with laughter.

His father had believed legacy was what survived you.

Names carved in stone.

Nathan had believed him once.

Legacy was what survived inside other people after your power was gone.

Control could survive.

His family had handed him an empire.

Grace had handed him the truth.

Lily had handed him a second chance.

May you like

He chose the last two.

And this time, nobody else got to choose for him.
