Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT THAT WAS ARRANGED

The Mercer Hotel bar had hosted a private charity event upstairs that night.
Matteo had been invited by Senator Thorne.
Mara had been sent there by Bianca to deliver a garment bag her assistant "forgot."
Neither knew the other would be there.
Victor.
Why put them in the same building?
Julian found the answer in Thorne's planning files.
At the time, Thorne believed Eleanor's missing evidence might pass automatically to Mara if she became involved with a Bellandi family member.
He wanted to see whether contact triggered anything.
"We were bait," Mara said.
Matteo shook his head. "The meeting was bait. What happened after was ours."
Good.
"Don't turn that night into ownership."
"I won't."
The distinction mattered.
Then a second document changed everything.
Victor had reported that Mara and Matteo left together.
Thorne ordered surveillance intensified.
Six weeks later, Bianca hired Mara permanently instead of through the staffing agency.
Mara remembered being told it was because she was "reliable."
In reality, they wanted her close.
"She knew?" Mara asked.
Bianca, questioned again, admitted she knew her father wanted Mara watched.
She claimed she did not know why.
"I thought it was about Preston," she said.
Mara believed that too.
Bianca's jealousy had been real.
It had simply been useful to her father.
That night, Thorne released doctored audio suggesting Matteo planned to use Mara's child to seize public port contracts.
News outlets ran it within minutes.
Politicians demanded investigations.
Then Matteo did something his advisers hated.
He released his own internal records to federal regulators.
Carlo's files.
Julian stared at him.
"This could cost you the company."
Matteo looked at Mara.
"Then it costs me the company."
Mara said, "Don't do it for me."
"I'm not."
He looked at his father's ledgers.
"I'm doing it because this ends somewhere."
Minutes later, Chen received an emergency call.
May you like
Senator Thorne had taken Preston from the hospital.
And he wanted Mara in exchange.
