Chapter 19 - ELEANOR

The hospital moved quickly.
Mara did not.
Fear made time thick.
Matteo stayed beside her until she told him to stop pacing.
"You're making the floor nervous."
"Sorry."
"Sit."
Hours later, their daughter arrived small, furious, and breathing on her own.
Mara cried when she heard the first sound.
Matteo did too.
He did not hide it.
The nurse asked for the baby's name.
Mara looked at Matteo.
"Eleanor," Mara said.
Matteo's eyes softened.
"Eleanor Bellandi Whitfield?"
Mara raised an eyebrow.
"Whitfield Bellandi."
"Of course."
Little Eleanor spent ten days in neonatal care.
Matteo learned to wash his hands for exactly the required time.
Mara learned that powerful men look ridiculous fighting with hospital gown ties.
They both learned exhaustion.
One evening, Matteo stood beside the incubator.
"My father left me a kingdom built partly on fear."
Mara looked at him.
"And?"
"I don't want to leave her one."
"Then don't."
"You always make impossible things sound like errands."
"That's because men make them sound like destiny when they don't want to do the work."
Six months after Eleanor's birth, Bellandi Group completed its restructuring under federal oversight.
Matteo kept legitimate logistics, real estate, and hospitality operations.
The rest was sold, closed, or surrendered.
He lost money.
He gained sleep.
Mara began training as a forensic accounting assistant through a program Chen recommended.
Her mother's old work no longer felt like a ghost story.
It felt like unfinished language she wanted to learn.
Then, on the anniversary of Eleanor Whitfield's death, Mara returned to the cemetery.
This time she carried her daughter.
Matteo walked beside her.
May you like
At the grave, someone was already waiting.
Bianca.
