Chapter 4 - THE NIGHT THEY WATCHED

Matteo crossed the room so quickly Preston stepped back.
"Who followed her?"
"Thorne security."
"When?"
"For months."
Mara felt exposed in a way the cemetery slaps had not managed.
Maybe even the night in Manhattan.
Preston pulled a flash drive from his coat.
"I copied this from Bianca's father's office."
Julian opened it on an offline laptop.
Photographs filled the screen.
Mara leaving the Whitfield mansion.
Mara buying groceries.
Mara at a clinic.
Mara entering the Mercer Hotel five months earlier.
Then Matteo entering the same hotel twenty-three minutes later.
"They knew."
Preston nodded.
"Not at first. They thought you were meeting someone connected to Bellandi. Then Bianca found the pregnancy test."
Mara looked at him. "And decided you were the father."
"She doesn't know about Matteo."
"Her father does," Julian said.
A file on the drive was labeled BELLANDI CONTACT.
If Whitfield pregnancy links to Bellandi, retrieve Eleanor asset immediately. Prevent paternity recognition until trust question resolved.
Mara read it twice.
"What trust?"
She looked at Matteo.
"What trust?"
He turned to Julian.
Julian sighed.
"Carlo Bellandi created a succession trust before he died. If Matteo has a recognized biological child, certain family voting shares move into a protected branch trust."
"How many?"
"Twenty-two percent."
Mara stared.
"My unborn baby owns twenty-two percent of a company connected to organized crime?"
Matteo's jaw tightened. "Bellandi Group is mostly legitimate now."
"Mostly is doing a lot of work in that sentence."
He accepted that without argument.
Preston pointed at another document.
"Thorne has been trying to buy control of Bellandi-controlled port property for two years. If Matteo dies without an heir, Carlo's old voting bloc can be purchased by outside partners."
Julian finished the thought.
"Including Thorne Infrastructure."
Mara put both hands over her stomach.
The baby had become leverage before it had a name.
Matteo looked at her.
"No one touches you."
"Stop saying things like you control the weather."
"I don't."
"But I control who gets close enough to try."
Then Julian's phone rang.
"The cemetery groundskeeper is dead."
Mara went cold.
"Why does that matter?"
May you like
Julian looked at the bracelet.
"Because he called me this morning and said Eleanor left something beneath her headstone."
