Chapter 16 - THE TUNNEL
Pike remained missing.
Hale began negotiating.
Malcolm began blaming Hale.
Everyone suddenly had a version of the truth that reduced their own guilt.
Grant stopped listening to versions.
He wanted records.
Hannah found the next one by accident.
Lucy was playing with the yellow flashlight near the old wine cellar when the beam disappeared through a crack behind shelving.
"There's a hole."
Grant almost told her not to touch anything.
Then he remembered what happened the last time adults made rules more important than noticing.
Security removed the shelves.
Behind them was a narrow service tunnel from the Prohibition era.
Grant's grandfather had used it to move liquor.
Malcolm had used it more recently.
The tunnel connected the mansion to an abandoned carriage house beyond the cameras.
Inside, investigators found Pike's temporary hideout.
Food.
A police radio.
And Owen Reed's wallet.
Hannah sat down hard.
For three years she had not known if her husband was alive.
Now the wallet felt like an answer she did not want.
Then a detective found a recent photograph.
Owen.
Older.
Bearded.
Alive.
Standing outside a federal courthouse in Maryland eight months earlier.
Hannah looked up.
"He's alive?"
Federal marshals confirmed it.
Owen had entered witness protection after escaping Pike three years ago.
He had been told contacting Hannah would expose her and Lucy.
Hannah's grief turned instantly into fury.
"He let me think he was dead."
Owen was brought to New York under guard.
Hannah did not hug him.
She slapped him once.
Then cried.
Then told him he deserved both.
Owen accepted it.
He had one final piece of evidence.
A backup from Pier 17 showing Hale speaking to Pike minutes before the explosion.
The audio was damaged.
Only one sentence survived.
Hale said, "If Mercer lives, make sure he can't identify anyone."
Grant touched his own eyes.
The blindness had not been an accident after all.
