Chapter 17 - CAROLINE'S LAST RECORDING

Caroline's final recording was hidden inside the train station clock in Grant's old study.

Emma remembered it.

Not clearly.

She remembered her mother lifting her onto the desk and saying, "If Daddy ever needs the truth, the train will tell him."

Grant had owned that clock for twenty years.

He had touched it thousands of times after going blind.

Never opened the back.

Inside was a memory card.

Caroline appeared on video the night before Pier 17.

Grant could not see her.

Daniel described her face.

Tired.

Angry.

Afraid.

Her voice was enough.

"Grant, if you hear this, I either failed to leave or I finally found the courage to tell you everything."

She explained the trust theft.

Malcolm's surveillance.

Hale's research.

Pike's threats.

Then she spoke about Grant.

"I love you. But you keep calling loyalty a virtue when half the men around you use it as a lock."

Grant closed his eyes.

"You think protecting the Mercer name protects Emma. It doesn't. It teaches dangerous people that you will forgive anything if they call it family."

No accusation had ever hit harder.

Caroline continued.

"Tomorrow I'm taking Emma to my sister. I'm going to federal investigators. I put something mild in your drink because I know you'll try to stop me long enough for Malcolm to arrive. I'm sorry. Maybe one day you'll understand why I was more afraid of your hesitation than your anger."

Grant bowed his head.

Then came the final line.

"If Emma survives any of this, don't make her inherit our war. Let her choose who she becomes."

The recording ended.

Emma sat across the room.

Grant asked, "Did you understand any of that?"

"Some."

"You don't owe this family a company."

She looked surprised.

"Okay."

"You don't owe me forgiveness either."

Long silence.

Then Emma stood and walked toward him.

She placed Captain, the one-eared stuffed rabbit recovered from Saint Arden, in his lap.

"I don't forgive you yet."

Grant nodded.

"Fair."

May you like

She sat beside him anyway.

For the first time, their shoulders touched.
