Chapter 18 - FIRST SIGHT

Voss scheduled surgery six weeks later.
Not a miracle operation.
Not a promise.
A procedure to repair scarred tissue and remove damage worsened by years of Hale's compound.
Grant signed the consent himself.
Daniel read nothing to him.
When the bandages came off, the room remained dark.
Grant felt panic rise.
Voss said, "Wait."
Then a line appeared.
Pale.
Vertical.
Window light.
Grant started crying before he could stop himself.
"I see something."
Hannah laughed softly.
Lucy whispered loudly, "Use my flashlight."
Everyone laughed.
Voss did not.
"Absolutely not yet."
Over the next days, shapes separated.
Dark against light.
Movement.
Color came strangely.
Yellow first.
Lucy wore the brightest yellow sweater she owned and stood ten feet away.
Grant stared until his eyes watered.
"I can see the sweater."
Lucy jumped.
"Can you see me?"
"Not your face."
She considered that.
"My face is good."
Grant laughed.
Emma watched from the doorway.
Grant knew her by height and movement but not features.
"Come closer?" he asked.
She did.
At three feet, her face was still soft and incomplete.
Brown hair.
Pale skin.
Eyes he could not fully focus on.
Then she smiled.
The shape of it hit him before detail did.
Caroline's smile.
Grant covered his mouth.
Emma immediately stiffened.
"What?"
"Nothing bad."
He wiped his face.
"You look like your mom when you smile."
Emma looked away, but she did not leave.
That afternoon, federal prosecutors charged Hale with conspiracy, unlawful experimentation, evidence tampering, and attempted murder-related offenses tied to Pier 17.
Pike was arrested at a bus station in Albany.
Malcolm faced kidnapping, fraud, obstruction, and conspiracy charges.
The headlines called it the Mercer scandal.
Grant called it paperwork arriving five years late.
Then the board requested an emergency meeting.

The family charter still contained the seven-year disability clause.
And Malcolm's allies wanted to enforce it before Grant's medical status could officially change.
