Chapter 10 - The Courtroom ShowdownOne month later.

The Family Courtroom of the State Superior District was cold, sterile, and smelled faintly of floor polish and old paper.

I sat at the prosecution table alongside Victoria, dressed in an immaculate charcoal-grey business suit. I looked healthy, confident, and completely in control.

Across the aisle sat Daniel and Carmen at the defense table.

They looked abysmal.

Daniel was wearing an ill-fitting suit he had bought off a clearance rack, his hair unkempt, deep dark circles carved beneath his hollow eyes. Carmen sat beside him, looking ten years older, wearing a faded dress, her mouth drawn into a permanent bitter sneer.

They couldn't afford a private attorney; they were being represented by a overworked, stressed-out public defender who was frantically shuffling through a disorganized stack of papers.

The judge—a stern, middle-aged woman named Honorable Judge Evelyn Reyes—struck her gavel against the wooden block.

BANG!

"Court is now in session regarding the matter of Vance vs. Gutierrez," Judge Reyes announced, her sharp eyes scanning the courtroom over her reading glasses. "We are here to rule on the emergency custody petition, asset division, and the civil fraud countersuit."

Victoria stood up smoothly, adjusting her jacket.

"Your Honor," Victoria began, her voice ringing clear through the room. "We have submitted forty-two pieces of primary evidence. This includes financial forensic reports proving the defendant, Daniel Gutierrez, embezzled over 1.2 million pesos from my client to purchase a luxury condo under his mother's shell company."

The public defender stood up weakly. "Your Honor... my client maintains that those funds were gifts provided within the marital structure..."

"Gifts?!" Judge Reyes interrupted, raising an eyebrow. "Mr. Attorney, wire logs show the funds were moved using forged digital signatures from an account designated specifically for property maintenance. That is not a gift; that is grand larceny."

The public defender swallowed hard and slowly sat back down.

Victoria continued, gesturing toward the projector screen on the wall. "Furthermore, Your Honor, we submit the medical evaluation of three-year-old Camila Gutierrez conducted on the night of December 14th by Dr. Sarah Jenkins at Memorial Hospital."

The screen flickered to life, displaying a formal medical report alongside high-resolution photographs of Camila’s bruised, freezing fingers and pale skin.

"The medical report confirms mild hypothermia, acute emotional distress, and signs of prolonged nutritional neglect," Victoria stated coldly. "The child was left in sub-fifty-degree weather for over two hours while the defendant and his mother consumed a five-hundred-dollar seafood meal inside."

Carmen leaped out of her chair, pounding her fist on the table. "THAT IS A LIE! She was outside for twenty minutes! She was being disciplined!"

"Mrs. Gutierrez! Sit down immediately or I will hold you in contempt!" Judge Reyes barked, slamming her gavel down.

BANG!

Daniel grabbed his mother's arm, pulling her back into her seat, his hands shaking violently.

Judge Reyes looked down at the documents on her desk, her face hardening into an expression of absolute disgust.

"I have reviewed the evidence, the medical reports, and the financial audits," Judge Reyes stated, her voice echoing off the high mahogany walls. "And in my fifteen years on the bench, I have rarely seen a more egregious display of spousal exploitation and child abuse."
