Chapter 9 - The Public SpectacleThe news of the eviction and the financial fraud investigation spread through our social circles like wildfire.

In high-society circles, reputation is everything. And Daniel’s family had spent three years pretending they were wealthy aristocrats who merely 'allowed' me to marry into their prestigious lineage.
By the following afternoon, Valeria’s Instagram account—which had over forty thousand followers built on photos of luxury vacations, designer bags, and fancy dinners—was flooded with thousands of brutal comments.
Someone had leaked the video from the gala night alongside the legal filing documents.
Commenter 1: Is this the girl whose family locked a 3-year-old on a balcony while eating seafood?! Disgusting trash!
Commenter 2: She bought all those Gucci bags with stolen money from her sister-in-law! #ScammerFamily
Commenter 3: Look at her latest story eating crab while a baby froze outside! Lock them up!
Valeria was forced to delete all her social media accounts within six hours, unable to handle the tidal wave of public outrage.
Meanwhile, Daniel’s friend who ran the 'consulting firm' called him into his office on Wednesday morning.
I was sitting in my office when Victoria received a copy of the termination letter.
Because of the active criminal investigation into Daniel for wire fraud, the consulting firm—desperate to protect their own corporate reputation—fired Daniel on the spot, revoked his severance package, and escorted him out of their building by security guards.
Daniel was now completely unemployed, homeless, facing felony criminal charges, and living in his aunt’s cramped, moldy basement alongside his furious mother and sobbing sister.
At 3:00 PM on Thursday, my phone rang again.
This time, it wasn't Daniel.
It was my father-in-law, Roberto.
I hesitated before picking up. Roberto was the only person in that family who had never actively insulted me, though his silence during his wife's abuse had made him complicit.
"Mariana?" Roberto’s voice was weak, trembling with genuine shame.
"Hello, Roberto," I said quietly.
"I... I am calling to apologize," the old man choked out, tears audible in his breath. "I didn't know what Carmen and Daniel were doing with your money. I didn't know about the condo... and God forgive me, I didn't know they put little Camila on the balcony that night. I was asleep in the back bedroom..."
I swallowed hard, feeling a small pang of pity for the old man. "I know you didn't know, Roberto. But Daniel and Carmen used my love for this family to steal millions."
"I know," Roberto wept. "I packed my bags today, Mariana. I am moving into my brother’s house in the countryside. I am filing for divorce from Carmen."
I blinked, stunned. "You're divorcing her?"
"She ruined my son," Roberto said bitterly. "She turned Daniel into a spoiled, heartless thief. And she neglected my granddaughter. I cannot stay married to a monster like that. I just wanted to tell you... I am so sorry for what they did to you and Camila."
"Thank you, Roberto," I whispered. "I've instructed my lawyer to make sure your heart medication is fully paid for out of a private trust account for the rest of your life."
Roberto broke down in quiet tears over the receiver. "Thank you, child... thank you."

I hung up the phone, feeling a heavy weight lift off my shoulders.
The Gutierrez family was collapsing from the inside out. But the real battle was about to begin in the courtroom.
