Chapter 15 - SOPHIA'S HUSBAND

I did not accuse Sophia.
I had learned something by then.
Evidence is not the same as meaning.
She opened Daniel's sealed bank envelope at my kitchen table.
Inside was a key.
A letter.
And a flash drive.
Sophia read the letter silently.
Then began crying.
"Daniel wasn't taking money."
"What was he doing?"
"He was pretending to."
Daniel had discovered Martin paying security technicians to create hidden access points in Moretti properties.
He went undercover without telling Sophia.
The $250,000 payment was proof Martin trusted him.
Daniel planned to give everything to federal investigators.
Then he died at a construction site.
An equipment failure.
"Was that an accident?"
Torres took the flash drive.
The files answered.
Daniel had recorded Martin discussing "fixing" a lift inspection before Daniel's death.
Not an explicit murder order.
Enough for prosecutors to reopen the case.
She had lost her husband to the same network that almost killed my son.
I felt ashamed of every time I had called my company a family.
Families do not bury people under paperwork.
The bank key opened a private evidence box.
Inside were backups of Elena's trust files.
Unedited camera logs.
Medical-access records.
And a video.
"If Dominic sees this," she said, "it means the system survived me."
Daniel looked into the camera.
"Then don't just arrest one man."
"Open everything."
Everything.
Not Martin alone.
Not Vittorio's old crimes alone.
All of it.
Hannah warned me what that meant.
Federal disclosure.
Civil suits.
Lost contracts.
Possible collapse of Moretti Maritime.
"You release this, we're done."
"Maybe we should be."
The next morning, I called an emergency board meeting.
Before I could enter, Hannah stopped me.
"Dominic."
"What?"
"Martin made one last transfer before his arrest."
"To who?"
She showed me.
Five million dollars.
