Chapter 16 - FIVE MILLION TO VINCENT

Vincent did not run.
"Tell me."
He slid a document across the table.
The five million was not payment to him.
It was payment to a trust in his daughter's name.
Martin had funded it two hours before the party.
"Why?"
"Leverage."
Vincent had refused an earlier demand to erase the entire week of kitchen footage.
"And you still erased seven minutes."
"For Maya."
I wanted to say I understood.
I didn't.
I understood fear.
I did not excuse the choice.
"You leave security today."
His eyes lowered.
"I know."
"You cooperate fully."
"Yes."
"And if prosecutors charge you, I don't interfere."
"For what it's worth, I am sorry."
"It is worth something."
"Not enough to keep your job."
That was the difference I was learning.
Compassion did not require pretending consequences were cruelty.
The board meeting was worse than any hostile takeover I had faced.
Directors shouted.
Lawyers threatened resignation.
Luca called full disclosure "financial suicide."
I placed Elena and Daniel's files on the table.
"These crimes were committed using our money, our systems, and our silence."
One director said, "Most are old."
"My son almost died three days ago."
That ended the argument.
I announced voluntary disclosure to federal regulators.
Independent monitors.
Freeze on related-party contracts.
Full review of every succession document.
The stock dropped twenty percent before lunch.
By dinner, two banks suspended credit lines.
News vans filled the road outside my estate.
"Did I do this?" he asked.
"No."
"If I didn't have the allergy—"
I crouched.
"Stop."
"Bad people made choices. Your body did nothing wrong."
Lily climbed onto the sofa beside him.
"I don't like cake anymore."
"Me neither."
Then my phone buzzed.
Torres.
"We found the original silver box purchase."
"What about it?"
"It wasn't Elena's."
"I recognized it."
"The engraving was copied."
My stomach dropped.
"Then where is Elena's real case?"
"In evidence from her crash."

Which meant Martin had created a replica to frame the past.
And somebody inside the police archive had given him the exact design.
