Chapter 17 - THE ARCHIVE LEAK

The police archive leak led to Captain Raymond Shaw.
Retired.
Former lead officer on Elena's crash.
Now a consultant for Moretti Maritime insurers.
Another circle closing.
Torres found payments from Martin to Shaw.
Shaw had provided photographs, reports, and the original evidence inventory.
The first report mentioned Luis as driver.
The final did not.
"Vittorio paid him," Torres said.
"Did Shaw sabotage the car?"
"No evidence."
"Did Martin?"
"No evidence."
For years I had imagined Elena's death as one clean mystery.
It was not.
It was a chain of cowardice.
Martin followed her.
My father covered it.
Shaw altered records.
Luis stayed silent.
Vincent obeyed old loyalties.
And I grieved so completely that I stopped asking questions.
Nobody had to plan the crash for all of them to help bury the truth.
Shaw was arrested for evidence tampering and bribery.
Martin was charged with attempted murder, kidnapping conspiracy, fraud, and obstruction.
Rusk cooperated.
Gerald Knox surrendered his law license and testified.
Vincent took a plea on the camera deletion.
"You really burned it down."
"No."
He glanced toward the reporters.
"Looks burned."
"I opened the windows."
"Elena would've liked that line."
Maybe.
That night, Sophia asked for a meeting.
"I want to resign."
"Because of all this?"
"Because Lily needs a home that isn't surrounded by guards."
I understood.
I hated that I understood.
"You'll get severance."
"I don't want charity."
"It's not charity. Your daughter saved my son's life."
Sophia's expression hardened.
"Don't turn that into a debt."
The words hit me.
She was right.
Lily had done something brave.
That did not make her property of my gratitude.
"No debt."
Sophia softened.
"Lily's leaving?"
"Maybe."
Then he said, "Can we still be friends?"
A small voice behind him answered.
"Yes."
Lily was holding a plate.
On it was one cupcake.
Ethan went pale.
"It's strawberry. Dr. Harris checked it."
May you like
Then the doorbell rang.
A federal agent stood outside carrying a sealed envelope addressed in Elena's handwriting.
