Chapter 18 - ELENA'S LAST ENVELOPE

The envelope had been held by a federal investigator who retired before Elena died.
He found it while clearing a private safe.
Inside was a letter Elena had written but never sent.
Dominic,
If you ever learn what I was investigating, you will want to punish everyone.
Please don't confuse punishment with repair.
She knew me.
Too well.
The letter named Martin.
Vittorio.
The security contracts.
The hidden trust amendments.
But the final pages were about Ethan.
Don't raise him to believe the Moretti name is something he owes.
Let him be a child before you make him an heir.
Ethan and Lily were outside with Sophia.
No suits.
No ballroom.
No cameras pointed at cake.
Just two children kicking a soccer ball badly across the lawn.
Elena wrote one more thing.
If the company cannot survive the truth, it does not deserve to survive.
The next board meeting lasted twelve minutes.
I proposed splitting the family trust from operating control.
Ethan's shares would remain protected but carry no expectation that he work for Moretti Maritime.
Independent trustees would manage them.
No Luca.
No family automatic successor.
No hidden clause.
The board hated it.
The court approved it.
Moretti Maritime survived, but smaller.
We sold two divisions.
Closed three corrupt subsidiaries.
Paid fines.
Lost political friends I should never have had.
I resigned as CEO and stayed temporarily as nonexecutive chair during restructuring.
For the first time in twenty years, my calendar had blank spaces.
I used one to take Ethan to school myself.
"Are we poor now?"
"No."
"Are you unemployed?"
"Kind of."
"Cool."
Sophia had decided not to move away after all.
She took a job with the new independent safety foundation created from recovered corruption funds.
Her condition was simple.
She did not work for me.
I agreed.
As Ethan climbed out of the car, Torres called.
Martin had requested a meeting before trial.
I almost refused.
Then she said, "He claims there's one person you still haven't identified."
May you like
"Who?"
"He says the person who chose Ethan's birthday as the day of the attack wasn't him."
