Chapter 12 - THE BRAKE HOSE

Forensic testing showed tool marks.
Deliberate damage.
The old case became homicide.
Owen asked for a deal.
He blamed a dead business partner.
Nobody believed him.
Then he offered something prosecutors could not ignore.
"Vanessa knows where the money went."
Torres asked, "What money?"
Owen smiled.
"The Claire fund."
Adrian had never heard that phrase.
Owen explained.
After Claire died, an insurance payout and founder dividend created a $28 million reserve for Lily and Noah.
Adrian knew the reserve existed.
What he did not know was that portions had been siphoned through management fees for years.
Lowell checked records.
Six million missing.
Transferred through Mercer consulting firms.
Vanessa had married Adrian after the theft began.
Not for love.
For access.
Or at least not only for love.
When confronted, Vanessa finally cracked.
"Owen told me the money was ours."
"Ours?"
"He said Claire destroyed a deal worth hundreds of millions."
Adrian stared.
"So my kids owed you?"
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't think like that at first."
"When did you start? When you locked Lily in a cage?"
She looked away.
"I was scared Noah would tell you."
"He did."
"Yes."
"And you called him a liar."
Vanessa began crying.
Adrian felt nothing.
Torres asked, "Did you know Owen damaged Claire's car?"
Vanessa whispered, "Not until after I married Adrian."
Adrian looked at her.
"And you stayed."
She nodded.
"Because he said if I left, he'd tell you I was part of it."
"Were you?"
"I helped steal money."
Silence.
"But I didn't kill Claire."
Adrian believed that part.
It changed almost nothing.
Then Torres's phone rang.
She listened.
Her expression hardened.
"Owen escaped transport."
Adrian stared.
"How?"
"Someone hit the police van."
"Where is he?"
May you like
Torres looked toward the mansion windows.
"We don't know."
