Chapter 14 - HIS FATHER'S SECRET

Adrian's father had been dead seven years.

Richard Cole was remembered as a builder, donor, and ruthless businessman.

Adrian had spent his life trying to become gentler than him.

Now Martin claimed Richard had known Claire was being threatened.

Lowell searched old estate files.

A sealed envelope surfaced in Richard's private safe records.

It had been delivered to Lowell after Richard died.

Lowell had never opened it because the instructions said:

FOR ADRIAN ONLY IF THE MERCER MATTER RETURNS.

The Mercer matter had returned.

Lowell brought the envelope.

Adrian opened it with Noah sitting beside him.

He almost asked his son to leave.

Then remembered his promise.

No more hidden truth.

Richard's letter was short.

Adrian,

I failed Claire. I believed Owen only wanted leverage. Martin told me the threats were business theater. I did nothing because I feared scandal more than danger. After her death, I learned the brake line had been cut. Martin begged me to bury it. I did.

Adrian stopped reading.

Noah whispered, "Grandpa knew?"

"Afterward."

"And didn't tell you?"

"No."

Noah stared at the floor.

"Why do grown-ups keep picking money?"

Adrian could barely answer.

"Because sometimes they convince themselves money is the same as safety."

The letter continued.

I created a second trust outside the company. If anyone connected to Mercer Capital ever attempts to control the children, that trust transfers voting power away from every Cole relative, including you.

Adrian blinked.

"Including me."

Lowell nodded.

"Your father didn't trust himself anymore."

The trust was worth enough shares to block the merger permanently.

But activation required one original document.

Claire's handwritten declaration.

The same side letter stolen from Lowell's office.

They had recovered it from the blue box.

Lowell smiled for the first time in days.

"Then they lose."

Marcus entered.

"Sir, we have a problem."

The blue box evidence had been moved to the police property room.

Someone had just set that room on fire.
