Chapter 15 - THE FIRE

Firefighters contained the blaze.

Most evidence survived.

Claire's original letter did not.

Only ashes remained inside its evidence sleeve.

Adrian stared through the glass at the blackened paper.

"So the trust can't activate."

Lowell shook his head.

"Not with a copy."

Torres looked furious.

An internal review showed a property clerk had accepted a maintenance worker after hours.

Fake ID.

Security camera showed Owen in a uniform.

Still free.

Still moving.

Then Noah spoke from behind Adrian.

"Mom made copies."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

"Mom copied important letters. She kept them in the piano bench."

Adrian stared.

Claire had taught Noah piano as a toddler.

He had not opened the old bench since her death.

They returned to the mansion with police.

Inside the bench were sheet music, photographs, and a sealed plastic envelope.

Claire's handwriting covered the front.

COPY TWO.

Lowell nearly laughed.

"A duplicate original. Signed and notarized."

The trust activated that afternoon.

The merger died.

Mercer Capital's stock collapsed.

Owen lost the financial reason for everything he had done.

Which made him more dangerous.

At 6:42 p.m., Adrian received a video call.

Owen appeared in a dark room.

"Congratulations."

Adrian's voice went cold.

"Where are you?"

"You took everything."

"You took my wife."

Owen's face tightened.

"That wasn't supposed to happen."

"But it did."

"And now you get to play hero father?"

Adrian said nothing.

Owen smiled.

"Ask Lily where her brother is."

Adrian's blood turned to ice.

He ran upstairs.

Lily was asleep under guard.

Noah's bed was empty.

The bathroom window stood open.
