Chapter 9 - CLAIRE'S LETTER

Lowell's assistant remembered Owen perfectly.
He had visited under the excuse of discussing merger diligence.
The next morning, Claire's side letter was gone.
Adrian asked what it said.
Lowell recited from memory.
If either child was removed from the country under coercion, fraud, or disputed guardianship, all voting authority transferred immediately to an independent trustee.
Vanessa's plan would fail if the letter surfaced.
Which meant they had stolen it.
Torres searched Owen's known properties.
Nothing.
Then Noah spoke from the doorway.
"The blue box."
Adrian turned.
"What blue box?"
"Owen gave Vanessa a blue box. She put it in Grandma's room."
Adrian's mother had died two years earlier. Her suite remained mostly untouched.
They found the box beneath an old dresser.
Inside was Claire's letter.
And something else.
A handwritten diary page.
Claire's handwriting.
Adrian read the date.
Three days before her fatal car accident.
Vanessa had not been in their lives then.
Or so Adrian thought.
The page said:
OWEN MERCER CAME AGAIN. HE WANTS THE FOUNDER SHARES. HE SAYS HIS SISTER CAN GET CLOSE TO ADRIAN LATER IF SHE HAS TO.
Adrian could not breathe.
Torres took the page from his hand.
"How long have you known Vanessa?"
"Three years. Claire died five years ago."
"Did she ever tell you she knew Owen's clients back then?"
"No."
Marcus opened the blue box's false bottom.
A photograph lay underneath.
Claire stood outside Cole Infrastructure headquarters.
Across the street, partly blurred, Owen stood beside a young woman.
Vanessa.
Adrian stared at the picture.

His marriage had not begun by accident.
It had begun with surveillance.
