Chapter 1 - THE SLAP

The first thing I heard was the scrape of my own knees across Evelyn Carter's kitchen tile.
The second was my mother-in-law laughing.
She had one fist twisted in my hair and the other wrapped around my wrist. Soap ran from my fingers. A plate shattered near the sink. Before I could get my balance, she yanked again and dragged me into the dining room where twelve members of Daniel's family were finishing Sunday lunch.
"There she is," Evelyn announced. "Our little thief."
My scalp burned. My knees felt skinned raw. Daniel stood near the fireplace with his arms folded.
My husband did not move.
"Evelyn, let go of me," I said.
"Admit what you did."
"I didn't do anything."
Her palm cracked across my mouth.
Silence fell.
I tasted blood.
"Five hundred dollars," she shouted. "Gone from my bedroom drawer. And who was upstairs alone this morning? Rebecca."
Aunt Susan gasped. Uncle Frank shook his head like the verdict had already been delivered.
I looked at Daniel. "Say something."
His jaw tightened. "If you took it, just give it back."
For a second, that hurt more than the slap.
Yesterday, I had accidentally overheard Evelyn in the sunroom with a man named Victor. I had recorded forty-three seconds because the words coming through the half-open door had made my blood run cold.
Money. Hotel rooms. Fake invoices. A plan to make Evelyn's husband sign papers he had never seen.
And one sentence I could not forget.
If Rebecca starts asking questions, we make sure nobody believes her.
Now I understood the missing cash.
Evelyn slapped me again. "Admit it."
I wiped my lip and slowly stood.
Then I laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because she had made one terrible mistake.
"You wanted everyone to judge me?" I pulled my phone from my apron pocket. "Fine."
Evelyn's face changed.
I tapped the screen.
May you like
"Let's hear what you really sound like."
And when Victor's voice filled the room, Evelyn stopped breathing.
