Chapter 9 - THE BOARDROOM

Evelyn stood at the head of the table.
"Walter is emotionally compromised," she said. "He has endangered company value by refusing a legitimate acquisition offer."
Walter laughed once. "You kidnapped my attorney."
Victor adjusted his cuff. "That's a serious accusation."
Officer Hayes entered behind us.
Victor's smile disappeared.
"Mr. Sloane," Hayes said, "don't leave."
Evelyn turned to the directors. "This is Rebecca's doing. She has manipulated Walter because she wants Daniel's inheritance."
There it was again.
Make me the villain before I could speak.
This time Daniel spoke first.
He came through the boardroom doors carrying Maya's laptop.
"No," he said. "This is my mother's doing."
Evelyn stared at him.
"Daniel, sit down."
He walked to the table and tore the proxy in half.
Victor chuckled. "Cute. Legally meaningless."
Daniel placed another document in front of the corporate secretary.
"Revocation filed electronically at 5:36 p.m."
The secretary checked her system.
"It's valid."
For the first time, Evelyn looked frightened.
Walter's twelve percent was back under Daniel's control.
Fifty-one percent restored.
"Motion to adjourn," Walter said.
"Seconded," Daniel replied.
The vote passed.
Victor stood.
Officer Hayes blocked him.
"We have some questions about Grant Mercer."
Victor's face stayed calm.
"Ask my lawyer."
Evelyn grabbed her purse.
"I'm leaving."
I stepped into her path.
She hissed, "Move."
"You dragged me by my hair today. You hit me twice. You framed me. And you still think I'm going to move because you told me to?"
Her hand twitched.
She wanted to slap me again.
But the room was full of witnesses now.
So she smiled.
"You think you've won?"
"No."
I looked at the police officer.
"I think you've finally run out of rooms where nobody stops you."
Hayes reached for Evelyn.
Then the corporate secretary gasped.
"Mr. Carter... there's a wire transfer pending."
Walter turned.
"How much?"
"Eleven million dollars."
