Chapter 10 - DANIEL'S SIGNATURE

Every head turned toward my husband.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"I didn't authorize that."

Evelyn whispered, "Of course you did."

He looked at her.

And I saw the truth before he said it.

She had his digital credentials.

Officer Hayes asked, "Can the transfer be stopped?"

The corporate secretary was already typing. "I'm trying."

Victor moved toward the door.

Two officers blocked him.

The transfer status flashed:

PROCESSING.

Walter called the bank's private client line.

I watched Daniel unravel beside me.

"Becca, I swear I didn't know."

"I believe you."

He looked relieved.

Then I finished.

"But you gave her the weapon."

His face fell.

"I know."

The bank froze the wire with thirty seconds to spare.

Eleven million dollars remained in the company account.

Victor cursed.

Hayes turned toward him. "Now we can add attempted fraud to the conversation."

Evelyn suddenly laughed.

Everyone stared.

"You all think this ends with Victor," she said.

Walter looked exhausted. "Doesn't it?"

"No."

She pointed at Daniel.

"Ask him why his name is on three more companies."

Daniel blinked. "What companies?"

Victor's eyes sharpened.

Evelyn had said too much.

The corporate secretary searched the state business registry.

Three limited liability companies appeared.

All formed within the previous eight months.

All listed Daniel Carter as manager.

Daniel had never heard of any of them.

One had received four million dollars from Carter Industrial.

Another owned a condominium downtown.

The third owned a small house on Willow Street.

I knew that address.

Everyone in the room knew it.

It was where Evelyn claimed she spent Thursday nights caring for her sick sister.

Her sister lived forty miles away.

Walter looked at the address, then at his wife.

"That's where you meet him."

Evelyn said nothing.

Victor did.

May you like

"Not me."

And suddenly the room went cold again.
