Chapter 4 - THE ATTORNEY

Walter called his attorney on speaker.
No answer.
He called again.
Straight to voicemail.
"Grant never ignores me," Walter said.
Evelyn sat on the edge of the desk like she was waiting for a meeting to begin.
"Maybe he got tired of cleaning up your mistakes."
Walter stared at her. "What have you done?"
For the first time, she looked tired.
"What I had to."
"For Victor?"
A flicker crossed her face.
Daniel finally stepped between them. "Mom, who is Victor?"
She looked at her son. "Someone who actually sees me."
Daniel recoiled as if she had struck him.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A text message.
YOU SHOULD HAVE KEPT THE RECORDING TO YOURSELF.
Below it was a photo of me leaving work two nights earlier.
Taken from across the street.
I showed Walter.
His expression hardened. "We're done talking. Everybody stays here. I'm calling the police."
Evelyn laughed. "And tell them what? That your wife had an affair?"
"That someone is threatening my daughter-in-law."
The phone buzzed again.
Another photo.
This one showed Daniel outside our apartment that morning.
The message read:
ASK YOUR HUSBAND WHAT HE SIGNED LAST TUESDAY.
I turned the screen toward him.
Daniel's face drained of color.
"What did you sign?" I asked.
"Nothing."
"Daniel."
"It was paperwork Mom gave me."
Walter's voice sharpened. "What paperwork?"
Daniel rubbed his forehead. "She said it was for the family holding company. A routine authorization."
Evelyn smiled faintly.
Walter stepped closer to his son.
"Did you read it?"
Daniel said nothing.
I already knew the answer.
Then Maya's tablet chimed.

She looked down and whispered, "Uncle Walter... somebody just accessed your home security system remotely."
One by one, every camera feed went black.
