Chapter 14 - ELENA'S SECOND COPY

Carmine returned to the abandoned development.

He searched until sunrise.

Not for evidence.

For Elena.

The way she thought.

She had always backed up everything.

Photos.

Receipts.

Family videos.

She once mailed a copy of their wedding photos to herself because she didn't trust cloud storage.

Carmine remembered.

"Mail."

"What?"

"Elena mailed things."

They searched the utility room again.

Behind a loose wall panel, officers found an old postal box key.

The number matched a private mailbox downtown.

The box still existed.

Rent had been prepaid for ten years.

Inside was one envelope.

Carmine's name was written across it.

His hands shook as he opened it.

A letter.

A memory card.

And a small brass key.

He read the letter first.

Carmine,

If you ever read this, I need you to understand one thing before everything else: none of this is your fault.

His eyes burned.

Elena continued.

Your father believes the Moretti name matters more than people. Helena believes money matters more than loyalty. Anthony is afraid. Fear makes people dangerous even when they do not think of themselves as cruel.

The memory card held audio.

Vincent's voice.

Helena's voice.

They argued in a garage.

Vincent: "You said you could handle her."

Helena: "I said I could get the files."

Vincent: "Then get them."

Helena: "And if she goes to police?"

A pause.

Vincent: "Then she doesn't get there."

Not a direct order.

But enough.

Then Helena said:

"Don't ask me to touch the car."

Vincent replied:

"I didn't."

A third voice entered.

A man's voice.

Carmine listened again.

Anthony whispered, "That's not me."

Carmine knew.

The voice belonged to his father's longtime driver, Paul Danner.

Paul had disappeared after Elena's funeral.

Reyes checked records.

Paul Danner was alive.

Living under his middle name in Arizona.

Helena's leverage was gone.

But now Carmine had a new question.

If Helena had refused to touch the car, why had she signed the service invoice?

The brass key in the envelope might answer that.

Stamped on it were two numbers.

May you like

317.

And a bank logo.
