Chapter 15 - BOX 317

The bank opened Box 317 with a court order.

Inside were records Elena had hidden before she died.

Cash ledgers.

Property maps.

Photographs.

And a handwritten notebook.

Helena's name appeared dozens of times.

She had moved Vincent's money.

But she had also been secretly copying records for Elena.

Reyes said, "So she was helping your wife."

"At some point."

The timeline was ugly.

Helena began as Vincent's employee.

Helped him hide illegal payments.

Then realized Vincent would sacrifice her if authorities came.

So she went to Elena.

Elena convinced her to collect proof.

Then something changed.

Money.

Fear.

Maybe both.

One final entry from Elena said:

H wants out. Says V is watching her. She signed the garage form because he made her. She swears she never touched the brakes. I don't know if I believe her.

Carmine sat back.

Helena had lied.

But perhaps not about everything.

Reyes arrested Paul Danner in Arizona.

He talked within hours.

Vincent had ordered him to "make the car unreliable."

Paul cut the line.

He expected Elena to discover the leak before driving far.

Instead, she took the highway.

She died.

Vincent paid Paul and Helena after the funeral.

Helena accepted the money.

Then vanished.

Years later, she returned under a new surname.

Why?

Carmine already knew.

Money.

Status.

Control.

But at the hospital, Helena gave a different answer.

"I came back because I thought I deserved the life Elena had."

Police watched from the doorway.

Helena's wrist was cuffed to the rail.

"You abused my son."

Her eyes filled.

"I hated what he represented."

"What?"

"Everything she kept after death."

"Your loyalty. The trust. The house. The company."

"He's a child."

"I know."

"Do you?"

"I lost control."

"You planned a guardianship case."

Carmine continued.

"You created evidence. You starved him. You kidnapped him."

Her voice cracked.

"I needed the files."

"You used my son as leverage."

Then said, "You think Leo is safe because I'm in here?"

May you like

"What does that mean?"

"Ask who changed the beneficiary on Elena's trust."
