Chapter 19 - THE LETTER

Carmine read the whole letter.

Helena did not apologize well.

People like Helena rarely did.

She explained.

Defended.

Minimized.

But between the excuses were facts.

She had planned to keep building a record of Leo as "difficult."

The scratched car.

Broken glass she intended to blame on him.

Missing jewelry.

School behavior complaints.

Then, after marriage, she planned to pressure Carmine into changing the trust.

If he refused, she would use Vincent's crimes to threaten the company.

Leo had never been the problem.

He had been the obstacle.

Carmine folded the letter.

He did not show it to Leo.

Not yet.

Maybe never.

Children did not need every truth at the moment adults discovered it.

They needed safety first.

A month later, Helena stood in court.

She looked smaller without the estate, the clothes, the car, the certainty.

The judge asked if she understood the charges.

"Yes."

"Did you knowingly take Leo Moretti without permission?"

"Yes."

"Did you deliberately create false evidence to characterize him as destructive?"

"Yes."

Carmine sat behind the prosecutor.

Leo was not there.

He was at school.

Exactly where a seven-year-old should be.

After sentencing, Helena turned.

"Carmine."

Her eyes filled.

"I did love you."

He believed she believed that.

It changed nothing.

"You loved access to me."

"That's not fair."

"No."

"Fair would have been Leo getting to be a child."

Deputies led her away.

Outside, reporters shouted questions.

Carmine ignored them.

Anthony waited across the street with his arm still in a sling.

"I'm leaving the company," he said.

"Okay."

"I'm going to sell my shares."

"Okay."

"I don't expect us to be brothers again."

"We are brothers."

Anthony's eyes lifted.

"That doesn't mean trust comes back automatically."

It hurt.

It was supposed to.

Then Carmine went home.

Leo ran into the garage holding a toy airplane.

The scratch was still there.

Carmine had never repaired it.

"Are you ever gonna fix that?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I want to remember something."

"What?"

Carmine crouched.

"That I almost believed the wrong person."

Leo studied him.

Then asked, "Did you?"

Carmine answered honestly.

"For a few seconds."

Leo's face fell.

May you like

Carmine continued.

"And then I looked at you."
