Chapter 18 - THE MORETTI NAME

The board meeting turned into war.

"You'll destroy the company."

"These allegations are decades old."

"Think of the employees."

"Think of your son."

That one made Carmine stop.

A director named Wallace leaned forward.

"If the stock collapses, Leo's trust collapses."

"So we teach him his money matters more than the truth?"

"No. We protect his future."

"My father used that sentence for thirty years."

Silence.

Carmine opened the ledger.

He named shell companies.

Bribes.

Illegal land purchases.

Then he announced independent counsel and voluntary disclosure to federal authorities.

Three directors resigned before lunch.

Shares dropped twelve percent.

By the end of the week, twenty-six.

News vans crowded the estate gate.

People called Carmine a hero.

Others called him a fool.

He felt like neither.

He felt tired.

Leo watched the news once.

Then asked, "Are we poor now?"

"No."

"Will we be?"

"Probably not."

Leo thought.

"Would that be bad?"

"It would be different."

"Rosa makes good grilled cheese."

Carmine hugged him.

The simplicity nearly broke him.

Helena was charged with kidnapping, child endangerment, evidence tampering, fraud, and attempted extortion.

Paul Danner faced charges related to Elena's death.

Eric faced weapons and conspiracy charges.

Anthony entered a cooperation agreement over the old theft.

Carmine refused to intervene.

One evening, Nora brought him a final document.

"What is this?"

"Helena's plea offer."

"Why am I seeing it?"

"Because prosecutors want your position."

Carmine read.

Helena would plead guilty.

Years in prison.

Restitution.

No contact with Leo.

He set it down.

"Fine."

Then hesitated.

"There's one more thing."

"What?"

"She wrote Leo a letter."

Carmine's face hardened.

"No."

"You don't have to give it to him."

"Good."

Nora slid the sealed envelope toward him.

"It's legally yours to decide."

He wanted to burn it.

Instead, he opened it.

The first sentence made his anger disappear into something colder.

Leo, I need you to know your father was never supposed to find you in the garage that day.
