Chapter 11 - THE TRIAL BEGINS

The case took eleven months to reach court.

By then, my marriage had been annulled.

Daniel’s name had disappeared from my passport paperwork, my bank accounts, and eventually my life.

Not my memory.

Memory does not obey legal orders.

The federal indictment covered fraud, conspiracy, identity crimes, obstruction, and charges connected to violence against multiple women.

Grayson faced a longer list.

Fisk cooperated.

So did two insurance brokers.

Rebecca testified first.

She wore navy blue.

No dramatic entrance.

No shaking.

She described her wedding.

The cruise.

The argument.

The false disappearance.

The Charleston house.

The years in hiding.

Daniel’s lawyer asked why she waited so long.

Rebecca answered:

“Because I believed the people looking for me had badges.”

The jury went silent.

Jennifer described Colorado.

Marisol described the dock.

Then I testified.

Daniel did not look at me until the prosecutor asked about the cabin.

“This marriage has rules,” I repeated.

His eyes lifted.

“And what did you believe he meant?”

“That I was about to be taught fear.”

“What happened?”

“I refused the lesson.”

The defense tried to turn my military service against me.

“You were trained in combat.”

“Some.”

“You injured Mr. Mercer.”

“I stopped a bat.”

“You could have left the cabin.”

“The door was locked.”

“You could have screamed.”

“I did not need to.”

The lawyer smiled.

“Because you were stronger than him?”

“No.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Because I knew the difference between panic and action.”

The lawyer changed subjects.

Then prosecutors introduced the photographs of Daniel buying the bat and the insurance records.

The jury saw the pattern.

Not rage.

Preparation.

On the final day of my testimony, the prosecution produced one new piece of evidence.

A voice recording from Daniel’s burner phone.

Grayson asked:

“What if she fights back?”

Daniel answered:

“She’s an office girl.”

The courtroom went completely still.

I almost laughed.

Administrative consultant.

Office girl.

He had built his plan around the version of me he preferred to believe.

And that mistake had opened the entire case.
