Chapter 9 - THE SECOND IDENTITY

The passport used Rebecca’s face under the name Laura Benton.
The laptop contained scanned versions of my driver’s license.
My birth certificate.
My military discharge papers.
Daniel had been building another identity package.
Not to kill me immediately.
To erase me first.
Donnelly explained the likely scheme.
Create evidence I voluntarily left.
Move money.
Use falsified travel records.
Then stage a later accident under another name.
It made insurance review harder because the disappearance and death happened in different systems.
I felt sick.
Daniel had not planned rage.
He had planned administration.
That almost offended me more.
He had studied the boring machinery of identity because nobody expects paperwork to be violent.
Rebecca said:
“He did that to me.”
Her passport showed her leaving the country after the cruise.
She never had.
Grayson inserted the travel record.
Fisk built the insurance chain.
Daniel controlled the money.
Then we found Marisol Vega inside the same laptop.
Her real passport.
Her false identity.
A death certificate under another name.
Donnelly went silent.
“Marisol may not be dead either.”
Records showed a woman matching her age and description had entered a domestic-violence shelter in Texas five years earlier under the name Teresa Mendez.
Agents rushed to confirm.
Daniel listened from his interview room.
He finally asked for a deal.
Donnelly laughed once.
“You haven’t been charged federally yet and you’re bargaining.”
“I know where Grayson keeps the original files.”
“Rebecca already brought us enough.”
“No.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“The originals that connect him to law enforcement.”
That mattered.
Grayson had allegedly corrupted case systems, falsified digital timestamps, and pressured local investigators.
If Daniel could prove it, the entire network opened.
Donnelly asked where.
Daniel gave an address.
A marina office in Fort Lauderdale.
Agents searched it.
They found a hidden server.
Years of files.
Insurance cases.
Missing-person reports.
Identity documents.
Payments.
Then one folder labeled SAND.
Inside were photographs of women.
Not four.
Eleven.
I stared at the screen.
Rebecca whispered:
“Oh my God.”
Daniel had not created all of them.
Some files predated him.
Grayson had been running the system longer.
May you like
Daniel was not the architect.
He was one of Grayson’s clients.
