Chapter 8 - REBECCA HALE

Rebecca Hale walked into a federal field office in Tampa at 6:12 that morning.

Alive.

Thin.

Thirty-seven.

Carrying a folder and a gun she surrendered before entering the lobby.

Grayson was in the trunk of her car.

Alive too.

Bound with plastic restraints.

Donnelly stared at the report.

I stared at Rebecca’s intake photograph.

Three years missing.

Three years hunted.

She had come back by capturing the man who helped erase her.

Rebecca refused to explain details until she spoke with me.

We connected by secure video.

Her first words were:

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“I tried to warn you.”

“You did.”

“I should have done more.”

“You were hiding from the same people.”

She looked older than her wedding photograph.

But her eyes were sharp.

“Daniel studies people,” she said.

“He studies what they want to believe.”

I understood that immediately.

He told me I was too independent for most men.

That he admired it.

He never did.

He admired the challenge until the challenge became a person he could not control.

Rebecca explained the Charleston house.

Daniel kept her there for nine days.

Grayson visited twice.

Fisk brought documents.

They wanted signatures transferring her small design company and authorizing insurance claims.

Rebecca escaped through a laundry-room window.

She did not go to police because Grayson told her he had friends in every agency that mattered.

For three years she moved between shelters, rented rooms, and cash jobs.

Then she began collecting proof.

“Why follow Daniel now?”

“Because he chose you.”

The answer hit differently than I expected.

Rebecca was not jealous.

She was terrified.

“I watched him repeat the same steps.”

“Which steps?”

“Fast engagement. Destination wedding. Insurance. Cruise.”

She swallowed.

“Then I found the bat purchase.”

I looked at Donnelly.

“Rebecca sent the photo?”

Donnelly nodded.

Rebecca had been the anonymous source that triggered the federal surveillance.

Then she said something none of us knew.

“Daniel has another cabin.”

“What?”

“Not on your booking.”

A hidden reservation under Mercer Maritime Consulting.

Interior cabin.

Deck Four.

Ship security searched it.

Inside were clothes that did not belong to Daniel.

Women’s clothes.

A burner laptop.

And a passport.

The photograph was Rebecca.

The name was not.

He had prepared a new identity for the woman he claimed had disappeared.

I asked:

“Why?”

May you like

Rebecca stared through the screen.

“Because he planned to make you become me.”
