Chapter 12 - REBECCA'S REAL STORY

After testimony ended for the day, Rebecca and I sat in a courthouse cafeteria.
For months we had spoken through agents, lawyers, and secure calls.
This was the first time we were simply two women drinking bad coffee.
“You really disarmed him that fast?” she asked.
“Fast enough.”
She smiled.
“I wish I could’ve seen his face.”
I smiled too.
Then the humor faded.
Rebecca said:
“I hated you at first.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because he got to have a normal life with you.”
“That life wasn’t normal.”
“I know now.”
She stared into her cup.
“When I saw the engagement announcement, I thought he had erased me so completely that he got to start over clean.”
“He didn’t.”
“No.”
She looked up.
“Neither did I.”
Rebecca had spent three years surviving.
She wanted something beyond survival.
Her real identity restored.
Her design business reopened.
Her mother told the truth.
Her credit repaired.
Her missing-person status erased.
The boring pieces of a life.
They mattered more than revenge.
I understood.
When you live through danger, people expect you to want dramatic justice.
Sometimes you want a utility bill with the right name.
A door nobody is watching.
A night of sleep.
The next morning, Grayson’s former assistant testified.
She had copied internal emails.
One message from Grayson to Daniel read:
Cruise environments remain ideal because passengers normalize intoxication, emotional conflict, and accidental falls.
The courtroom grew colder.
This was why Daniel chose honeymoons.
Romance provided cover.
People expected champagne.
Arguments.
Late nights.
Balconies.
Water.
The setting did half the lying for him.
Then the assistant revealed something else.
Daniel had scheduled another policy appointment for the week after our cruise.
Not for me.
For a woman named Elise Carter.
I knew the name.
She worked with Daniel.
He had introduced her at our rehearsal dinner as “just a colleague.”
Rebecca looked at me.
May you like
Another woman was already being lined up.
Daniel had planned my replacement before our honeymoon began.
