Chapter 1 - THE BRACE

Lucinda tore the medical brace from my daughter's leg and watched her fall.

Ruby hit the ballroom floor hard enough to make the crystal glasses jump.

"Pain will make you stronger," Lucinda said.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then I did.

I crossed the room, dropped beside my six-year-old daughter, and lifted her carefully.

"Ruby? Look at me."

Her face was wet with tears.

"Daddy... she takes it whenever you leave."

The room went silent.

I looked at Lucinda.

"Whenever I leave?"

She folded her arms.

"She's dramatic. The doctor said she needs to use the leg."

"The doctor said no such thing."

Ruby clutched my shirt.

"She says if I limp, you feel sorry for me."

That was when Marco, one of my bodyguards, stepped forward.

"Boss."

He held out a memory card.

"The ballroom system recorded the birthday setup last week. We kept the backup after the main server was reset."

I stared at the card.

"Show me."

The wall screen lit up.

There was Lucinda.

Ruby sat in a chair near the piano while decorators worked around them.

The second I left the room, Lucinda walked over, knelt, unfastened the brace, and pulled it from Ruby's leg.

Ruby begged.

Lucinda smiled.

"If you keep limping, Salvatore keeps feeling sorry for you."

Another clip.

Another day.

Another brace removal.

Ruby crying in silence.

Then Lucinda's voice again.

"You want your father to love you? Stop acting broken."

Ruby buried her face in my shoulder.

Lucinda lunged for the memory card.

I caught her wrist.

"You knew she was injured."

She froze.

"You just hated that my daughter had my attention."

Her face drained.

I handed the card back to Marco.

"Copy everything."

Lucinda finally found her voice.

Ruby was still shaking against me. I could feel every small breath through my shirt. Around us, people who had spent years asking me for favors suddenly found the marble floor fascinating. Nobody wanted to be the first person to admit they had watched Lucinda bully a child and mistaken it for discipline.

"Salvatore, don't do this in front of everyone."

I looked around the ballroom.

Family. Lawyers. Business partners. The woman Ruby's doctor trusted.

"You wanted her to learn pain," I said.

Then my phone buzzed.

Ruby's orthopedic surgeon had sent an urgent message.

DO NOT LET LUCINDA ACCESS RUBY'S MEDICAL FILE AGAIN.

I read it twice.

Then I looked up.

Again?
